The Interactive Media Laboratory (IML) at Dartmouth
Medical School recently completed a project in which
it explored and evaluated methods of delivering high-
quality, individualized, interactive multimedia programs
on-demand via the Internet. The goal of this project,
which was funded by a grant from the Health Resources
and Services Administration (HRSA), was to develop and
demonstrate an efficient method for providing continuing
education to health care professionals who live and work
in rural areas. This involved two steps:
- The conversion of one of our programs, "Primary Care
of the HIV/AIDS Patient," from a CD-ROM version into
one that can be streamed over the Internet via a high-
speed connection. This program is an excellent
example of a clinical education tool that employs a
robust educational model developed by the IML, the
"Virtual Practicum." It is available below for streaming.
- The utilization of advanced Internet technologies
(DirecPC) in order to deliver, via satellite, real-time
streamed video of sufficient quality to support the
application. Such a satellite connection provides
people living in rural areas with a fast Internet
connection, enabling them to stream the HIV program.
